Dr. Mark Tupper
MMO Appointee – Marine Environment
Dr Mark Tupper was born in Dawlish, Devon but grew up in Canada and has since lived in a dozen countries and conducted fisheries-related research and consulting in over 30 countries globally.
Mark holds a BSc in Marine Biology from the University of New Brunswick, MSc in Biological Oceanography from McGill University, and a PhD in Marine Biology from Dalhousie University. He has spent the last 35 years working to understand (1) the drivers of marine and coastal ecosystem health, particularly coral reefs, mangrove forests, and seagrass meadows, (2) the drivers of fish population biomass, especially that of reef fishes, and (3) patterns of fish utilisation.
His current interests are focused on sustainable management of marine fisheries and fish habitat, including all aspects from capture to processing. Mark is a Fellow of the Marine Biological Association of the UK and a Certified Fisheries Professional through the American Fisheries Society. He has developed national and provincial/state fisheries management plans for numerous fisheries management authorities in North and South America, the Caribbean, and the Asia-Pacific region.
Since settling in Cumbria, Mark is now developing a fisheries-related programme of teaching and research at the University of Cumbria. His motivation for joining the NWIFCA is to learn more about Cumbria’s fisheries and to support research and management of fisheries and fish habitat along the north-western coast of England.
