My father started fishing from Fleetwood in 1962. I first went to sea with him when I was about 10; it wasn’t long before inshore trawling became my chosen career. I started work aboard FD204 “Faith Star” in 1974; first skippered an inshore trawler FD336 “Ideal” in 1977; gained a command qualification in 19870 and, having saved hard purchased a one-third share of B315 “Jacqueline Roberta” in 1981. As the family business developed I subsequently purchased a one-third share of FD5 “Gien Mie”.
On my third application for a post with the North Western and North Wales Sea Fisheries Committee I was appointed Fisheries Officer for the then Central Area (River Wyre to River Dee). I held this post under various titles until retirement in 2016.
My interests include the Air Cadets (37 years as an adult instructor), collecting and shooting historic firearms. I have a small sailing boat and occasionally fish for domestic purpose.
I am not given to academia; during my career with NW&NWSFC/NWSFC and NWIFCA I received training commensurate with my post including attending the RN-BSFO training course. My best asset has always been my in-depth knowledge of the local inshore fishery and a first class understanding of fishing gear and practices. A widely respected practical approach to fisheries protection and management has proved the old adage that “knowledge is power”.
I am happily retired from enforcement duties but look forward to giving practical input and experience into the management of the NWIFCA District.
