Morecambe Bay Cockle Fishery

Towards the end of April, NWIFCA officers surveyed the Flookburgh cockle bed in Morecambe Bay to look at the current state of the stock. Our members had agreed to use Flookburgh as an indicator bed for the entire stock across the entire Bay to help us determine whether further surveys of all the other beds should be carried out this Spring with a view to an earlier opening in July (rather than the usual September).

NWIFCA can confirm there were sufficient quantities of sized cockle at Flookburgh to warrant further surveys, and so in early May, officers will working across the other five beds within Morecambe Bay. A decision will then be made by our members at the end of May as to whether or not we can open the beds in July. For further information, please contact us.
